The painting is a patchwork of 'fabric' and the fabric of the painting is broken by a scattering of cut-out dreams.

The figure is of ambiguous gender but the coat is Jacob’s.
"This image emerged because I was developing the floral blanket and carpet motifs and trying to find a new expression for this.
I ended up with a far-away, dreamy image."

A visit to a major Gauguin exhibition is reflected here in the treatment of the tree and choice of palette.
A Persian miniature of King Darius and Herdsmen inspires the conceit of horse and figure.
"I’m trying to free up the tightness of the miniature with broad, very loose brushwork whilst giving the painting a simple geometry.
The horse blanket allows me to 'quarter' the image with a painting within a painting."

Another instance where the image is quartered with the use of a horse blanket which becomes a canvas of its own.
The cloak separates the quarter occupied by the tree, with a triangle.
The horse is really incidental.
