The carpet seems oddly placed and painted freely to disturb the classic composition.
This open landscape has the curiously still atmosphere of a silent room, which has been hard to recapture in other paintings.

As in 'The Three Kings' there is an odd perspective, with long vertical lines and angled enclosures.
The carpet is placed in an open room so we don't know if we are in or out, and to disorientate further, the horse is on the carpet.

A freer horse against a flat, frieze of richly blanketed horses in the foreground, with stark, striped awnings and a brocade backdrop - the composition is a patchwork of textiles.

The disjointed horse-on-a-carpet theme is explored further with some wit. The fans act as halos for a hallowed champion and the figures are partly obscured, giving the horse the advantage of more than four legs.
